Fun Fact Friday: History of the Bradford Watermelon

Unique watermelon developed by Nathaniel Bradford in the 1850s in South Carolina. Bradford had a knack for tinkering and improving the vegetables and fruits grown on his farm. This strain of watermelon soon became far superior to any watermelons on the market during that time.

The Bradford Watermelon was known for its high flavor profile and sweetness. In addition, this watermelon was perfect for rind pickling. In the early 1900s the watermelon was modified for shipping preservation, giving it a tougher rind and sacrificing the sweet flavor. This led to the decline and disappearance of this once very popular and exclusive product.

In the late 1990’s descendants of Nathanial Bradford, who also grew watermelons, traced their bloodline and watermelon production back to the notorious farmer. With the knowledge of this iconic story the Bradford family planted the largest field of watermelons the family had ever grown. Today, Bradford watermelons and the seeds of this superior melon are prominent, prospering, and on the market!

Lockewood Acres’ was lucky enough to purchase the seeds of the Bradford Watermelon, and we grow and harvest these melons every year. Our watermelons are fast selling and in high demand at the farmer’s market every summer.
